EVOLVING STRATEGIES

This week’s opportunity to evolve your strategy

The only way to increase sales without a huge budget

Research shows customers come to shop on a website for convenience because they can do it at any time and from anywhere. Customers also want information quickly and easily, so you have 3 seconds of their attention before they decide to leave your website. Keep in mind it’s not just for buying that customers come online, it’s also to research what’s available to meet their needs and solve their problem.

They want the convenience to be able to browse your site, review all your products, before deciding to buy. What your website goal should be is to provide them convenience by allowing them to easily find everything they’re looking for and have no trouble shopping your site. The easier it is, the higher the likelihood they’ll find what they’e looking for and decide to buy.

Imagine you’re browsing for a new bag and have been on and off looking for just the right one for a few months now. You decide to hop on websites whenever you have a moment to see if you can find that new work bag that meets all your criteria.

It’s not a rush for you because the current one is holding up well however you do want to find a new one because the edges are starting to peel. As you’re browsing on your lunch break and in the evenings with a show on in the background you realize how much you love doing it online. Browsing at work or at home it’s the convenience of doing it when it’s easiest for you.

How to apply this:

What you should takeaway and apply to your digital sales strategy:

  1. Have a mobile friendly site

  2. Simplify pages and allow product and category groupings

  3. Make sure your site is working

Have a mobile friendly site

Having your site adjust to a mobile friendly version of it, makes it easier for your customers. Almost 50% of traffic for the average site consists of people landing on a site with their phones.

This means a smaller device, and if you’re just using your desktop site it means more work for your customers. They’re having to zoom in and out constantly to view products and move to different pages. This makes it timely, requires a lot of effort and can be frustrating for customers.

Simplify pages and allow product and category groupings

Allowing customers to more easily shop based on products and categories gets them to the point of your site. You want them on your product pages browsing all the amazing products you have, and deciding to buy.

Customers shop based on a problem they’ve identified and are looking to solve. Categorization let’s them easily research what’s available then decide to buy.

For example: Telecommunications companies generally categorize the following on their site:

  • Mobile Phones

  • Mobile Rate Plans

  • Internet Packages

Make sure your site is working

The biggest obstacle I see with clients is their website or pages are not working. Leading customers to 404 error pages. This is the opposite of convenience and makes it more challenging for them to find what they’re looking for.

Instead allow your customers to come to your site 24/7 at their convenience. Intermittently run tests, check pages and CTAs for issues. Make sure to fix them as soon as possible so the customer can easily continue to shop.

Avoid shutting down entire websites to fix errors if possible. As they may see it as not functioning and never come back or think the business has shut down.
