How Microsoft uses their site to drive digital sales

Microsoft is a well known brand in the tech industry, and a name people turn to when looking for new tech products. So how can they manage to drive traffic to their site without overwhelming their customers? They have a lot products and services, it’s easy to overload the site.

Too much information and consumers will leave without buying. 38% of people on average leave a website if the layout isn’t attractive and 65% of the population are visual learners. What this means is if Microsoft isn’t strategic in how they design their site, they’ll likely continue to drive tons of traffic but lose customers.

Imagine you’re a customer shopping on a website, and there’s too much going on. You’re having a difficult time focusing on one item at a time. Lots of colours, placement of icons. You’re not sure where to turn to first. You feel overwhelmed, so you decide to go back to your search results and find another business that has what you’re looking for.

How to apply this:

What you should takeaway and apply to your digital sales strategy:

  1. Simple and clean lines with white space

  2. Consistent colour schemes from brand colours

  3. Images to balance content

Simple and clean lines with white space

Lots of white space helps to give a balance to the amount of imagery and content you’re seeing. Not enough white space and it feels like you’re being overloaded with information.

Always go with a simpler approach in layout, design, colours and even CTA designs with fonts. It’s all about creating a balance between the content you’re putting on your site and empty space, generally you want to go with 70/30. 70% content 30% white space.

Consistent colour schemes from brand colours

Microsoft does a great job of using their neon green for Xbox to add in their home page banners with a touch of the green, and a stripe at the top. The colours contrast nicely with the overall Microsoft brand colours.

  • Keep the colour usage consistent across all assets

  • Find a balance of using colours with keeping black and white. Too many colours overloads the page and consumers can’t focus.

  • Use your strongest colours for the most important pieces of information. 1-3 messages that are the key.

Images to balance content

There’s tons of content to share, always. Remember though an image can speak volumes as compared to paragraphs of information.

Here’s how to find a balance:

  1. When you have lots of content to share, use bullet points and remove fluff.

  2. Add in large imagery to provide a balance of content to images.

This also allows your consumers to see the details of the products you offer. People naturally gravitate to images over copy, because they can more easily digest the information.

Use that to your advantage by placing people in your images so consumers can associate with it. They place themselves in the position of the people in the image and can more easily associate with your products.
